After releasing their latest EP back in April ‘Mirror’s Edge', Aussie metalcore band Northlane are out on the road across Europe and the UK. Tonight, they are here in the Midlands at the O2 Institute Birmingham. It may be a Wednesday night, but there is no shortage of a crowd here. I have to admit, I’m a bit of a newbie to everyone on the bill tonight, from what I heard of them, walking into the room and being greeted with the sound of The Proclaimers and Smash Mouth was not what I expected, however, I love a band with a sense of humour so that ticked a box for me.
First up is Ten56, who kicked off hard and heavy right from the get-go. They may have been the opening act, but they managed to control the room, including a “big clit energy” girls-only mosh pit and several walls of death on command.
Following up was Parisian band Novelists, fronted by Camille Contreras. You wouldn’t know unless you did a quick Google that she had only been leading the once male-fronted band for just over a year. This is another band that knows how to win over a crowd, especially with Contreras's contrast of screams and clean vocals. I try not to be comparative, but if you’re a fan of Spiritbox, they are probably right up your alley.
Finally, it's time for Northlane, the stage is lit with an almost vaporwave-esque aesthetic, with some members sporting red light, eyepieces. From the moment frontman Marcus Bridge takes the stage for the opening track ‘Carbonized’, he delivers powerful vocals, seamlessly switching between raw screams and melodic cleans. The moody lighting and high energy continues through ‘Institution’ and ‘Miasma’ before the band endearingly interacts with the crowd. “Aussie Aussie Aussie” chants a crowd member, “this one goes out to the cunt (endearing) who started the Aussie Aussie Aussie chant” dedicating ‘4D’ to them.
For fans of the new EP ‘Mirror’s Edge’ you’re in luck as 5/6 tracks are being played this tour, as well as a good mix of tracks from their 2017-present day repertoire. Overall a great live performance musically mirrored with a transcending light show.
