BEX - 2ND NOVEMBER 2023 - DEAD WAX DIGBETH

Dead Wax doesn't appear to be the same as usual. Even though Halloween had been and gone just two days prior, the venue is decked out in skeletons, baby dolls hanging from any frame possible, and wanted posters can be seen on the wall. But this isn't for the pubs annual Halloween party, but for BEX as part of her 'Welcome 2 Hell' tour.

After support from Twin Skeletons and Terrapins, the venue is haunted with spooky background music while the band sets up, before BEX takes a seat in a rocking chair in the front corner of the stage, opening the set with 'Empathy'.

What's quite apparent very quickly from BEX's show is that this is going to be more than a gig, but a performance. Her presence onstage is captivating from the way she moves to the facial expressions pulled at towards the crowd members not just at the front, but those at the back too.

A significant part of the set is the theatre, as demonstrated by the moment when blood spurted from BEX's mouth and water guns were aimed at the audience.

After songs such as 'Tiptoe' and 'Bite my Tongue', it's time for a costume contest, voted for by the audience through using the classic cheer-o-meter method. Occasionally, two bass guitars will be seen onstage, giving the performance a deeper, heavier sound than produced by your standard guitar + bass band.

"Sit Down Cow," a song that included the well-known nursery rhyme "Rain Rain Go Away," once again encouraged audience participation.

The entire show is packed with creativity and, most importantly, really great songs. Yes, we may all appreciate a well-executed, high-end show every now and again, but tonight proves DIY can be superior. If you haven't seen BEX live before, check her out next time she's in town!
