Fans who first discovered Pale Waves for their signature gloomy pop sound might find something a little different on their latest album, 'Smitten'. The Mancunian four-piece stays true to their roots in the first half, blending that familiar mix of "Avril Lavigne meets The Cure."
However, as the album progresses, there's a noticeable shift toward a more contemporary pop sound. To contradict slightly, this shift also carries a nostalgic feel, evoking bands like The Cranberries or The Corrs. For some listeners, this change may be refreshing, while others might feel it's a step away from the band's classic sound, though neither style feels out of place.
The album is heavily influenced by vocalist Heather Baron-Gracie's personal experiences, especially in relationships—something listeners from the LGBTQIA+ community may particularly resonate with and find comforting. "Glasgow" stands out as a track that leans into nostalgia, with a riff reminiscent of The Cure's Disintegration era.
Though the lyrical content isn't overly complex, many songs have a catchy charm, particularly "Perfume" and the closing track "Slow." "Kiss Me Again" also feels tailor-made for live performances.
Overall, 'Smitten' balances evolution and familiarity, making it an engaging listen for both new and long-time fans.
